Supercomputing and AI systems designed for large language models can incorporate tens or hundreds of thousands of compute nodes. At the heart of these massive systems lies the interconnect, the backbone that dictates overall performance. For these systems to perform well, the interconnect must seamlessly scale alongside the high-end compute elements. This is where NET4EXA steps in:

  • Building on the success of BXI (BullSequana eXascale Interconnect), Europe’s production-proven interconnect, and based on the research for its evolution carried out in the RED-SEA and other previous European RIA projects, NET4EXA will pursue the development of the next generation of European Interconnects (BXIv3). This includes both the switch and network interface, encompassing both hardware and its associated software. The project will showcase a fully operational pilot system, poised for adoption and integration into exascale and post-exascale European supercomputers.
  • NET4EXA will also prepare the subsequent version, BXIv4, planned for implementation after this Innovation Action. The project will contribute by offering analysis and preliminary design for upcoming interconnect features, thus paving the way for continued progress in the field.

Net4Exa is a project funded by the Horizon Europe Programme, completed by national funding schemes (e.g. Bpifrance for French partners).

Our role

BULL is a leading industrial partner and key driver of the NET4EXA project, playing a central role in the development and industrialisation of BXIv3, as well as preparing the next-generation BXIv4. It brings extensive field experience in BXI, a state-of-the-art exascalable interconnect technology and the first European interconnect represented in the Top500, positioning BULL at the forefront of European HPC innovation.

BULL also acts as project manager and technical coordinator, ensuring the overall technical coherence and progress of the project. It leads the work package (WP) on “Fabric Management & Scalability” and contribute to all WPs. In addition, BULL leads the WP dedicated to “Communication, IP management, & Exploitation”, playing a key role in maximising the project’s impact and industrial uptake.

During the second period of the project, a pilot system will be deployed at BULL’s premises in Les clayes-sous-bois (France) to demonstrate BXIv3 solutions at a high Technical Readiness Level (TRL 8), paving the way for large-scale industrial deployment.
