MILLENION is a flagship project under the European Commission’s Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Quantum Technologies Flagship. This ambitious collaboration brings together leading academic and industrial partners across Europe to develop a modular, scalable quantum computing platform. They aim to deliver a high-performance, fault-tolerant quantum register of 1,000 qubits, addressing key challenges in transitioning quantum computing from laboratory research to industrial-scale applications.

Phase One: March 2023 – August 2026
The first phase focuses on building Europe’s first stable, large-scale quantum computing demonstrator, featuring:

  • Scalable ion-trap technology, leveraging modular fabrication process, integrated control electronics, and optics.
  • 100-qubit control capability, enabling complex quantum operations.
  • A holistic firmware stack, from quantum processing units (QPU) to standardized interfaces and software development kits (SDKs).
  • Continuous operation monitoring, using scalable verification and validation procedures.
  • Routine operation in the quantum advantage regime, surpassing classical computing power.
  • Cloud-based access, integrated with high-performance computing (HPC) and data centers for hybrid algorithm execution.
Our role

Bull is at the forefront of several critical tasks within MILLENION phase 1:

  • Designing the overall architecture for integrating ion-trap systems into HPC environments.
  • Developing hardware models and a robust compilation stack.
  • Demonstrating both internal and external use cases on the project’s hardware platforms.
